This essay is in three parts! First, compare the myth of Vertumnus and Pomona to the myths of Callisto, Salmacis, and Philomela, considering the themes of disguise, force, and “equal” desire, and also how positively or negatively each story ends. Then, in part two, make an argument for the hero from Greek mythology that Glaucus (your player-character in Mythos Unbound) is most like. Does the story of Glaucus in the House of Octavius Quartio end positively or negatively? What are several key moments in the story arc that brings him to this point (moments when things seemed to be going well, and when they did not)? What key decisions did he make? Compare this with the story arc of a significant Greek hero. Finally, why does Epictetus object to animal sacrifice, despite its central role in Roman and Greek religion? Consider his argument in the light of violence throughout the Metamorphoses, providing three examples in which the use of violence seems “justified,” and three examples when it does not.
